Why black and white

Colour is a decision. Black and white removes one, and what's left is easier to see clearly — the angle of a jaw, the weight of a hand.

Interacting with light

The angle of the face, the direction of gaze and the expression all contribute to the look and feel.

Notes, on light

Treating light like a character

A single coloured gel changes a plain corner into somewhere else entirely. The light — the red, the blue, the violet are mostly just gels, LEDs and patience, not software.
